Protect Yourself from Scams!

Incoming call - unknown callerA recent AARP ElderWatch survey found that 73% of Colorado adults are very worried about scams and fraud. As we kick off 2025, know the red flags to watch out for so that you can recognize fraud and have the peace of mind you deserve.

Here are some common red flags to watch out for:

  • Requests for payment via pre-paid gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or peer-to-peer payment apps.
  • Unsolicited contact from government agencies, businesses, or other entities that seem unprofessional.
  • Requests to provide or verify sensitive personal information such as bank account numbers, health information, or Social Security numbers.
  • Urgent requests with tight timelines that don’t allow for verification.
  • Offers that seem “too good to be true” or not in line with market value.
  • Limited or no contact information and few or no third-party reviews.

In addition to recognizing red flags, trusting your instincts is crucial. If something feels off, don't proceed. If you have questions about a potential scam, reach out to an AARP ElderWatch volunteer specialist for guidance and support. Stay vigilant and scam-free in 2025!
